A Favorite Stop Along Skyline Drive
If you’re driving along Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park, there are plenty of scenic overlooks to choose from — but Hogback Overlook stands out as one of the best in the northern section of the park.
Located near mile marker 21, it’s one of the earlier overlooks you’ll reach when entering from the Front Royal entrance, making it a perfect first stop to take in the scale of the Shenandoah Valley.
I’ve stopped here multiple times, and it’s one of those places that feels different every time depending on the light and conditions.
Hogback Overlook is one of the most popular overlooks along Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park, offering expansive views of the Shenandoah Valley.

What Makes Hogback Overlook Special
What sets Hogback Overlook apart is the wide, open view of the Shenandoah Valley.
Unlike some overlooks that are partially enclosed by trees or ridgelines, Hogback opens up into a sweeping landscape where you can see layer after layer of mountains stretching into the distance.
On clear days, visibility is excellent, and during the right lighting conditions, the scene becomes even more dramatic as shadows and highlights define the ridges.
It’s one of those places where you can just stand and take it all in without needing to go any further.
Photography at Hogback Overlook
From a photography standpoint, Hogback Overlook is one of the better locations along Skyline Drive, especially if you’re looking for layered mountain compositions.
The depth of the valley allows you to:
capture multiple ridgelines fading into the distance
use atmospheric haze for natural separation
create strong compositions with foreground and background elements
Even during midday, you can find interesting compositions, but this is a location that really benefits from better light.
For the best lighting, visiting during golden hour can dramatically improve your photos.

Best Time to Visit Hogback Overlook
Timing makes a big difference here.
Sunset is one of the best times to visit, especially when clouds are present to reflect color across the sky
Sunrise can also work well, depending on conditions
Midday still offers great views, but flatter lighting
If you’re planning a photography-focused trip, I would prioritize either early morning or late evening for the best results.
Fall is also a popular time to visit due to foliage, but it can get busy.

Sunset is where Hogback Overlook really stands out.
As the sun drops, the light stretches across the valley and begins to define each ridge. The contrast increases, and the scene takes on a completely different feel compared to earlier in the day.
If there are clouds in the sky, the color can reflect across the entire landscape, creating some really strong conditions for photography.
It’s one of the better sunset locations along Skyline Drive, especially if you’re staying in the northern section of the park.
Night Sky Photography at Hogback Overlook

Hogback Overlook can also work well for night sky photography, depending on conditions.
Because of its elevation and open views, it provides a good vantage point for photographing the night sky.
During one visit, I was able to capture a composition using a tree silhouette in the foreground with the stars filling the sky behind it. Locations like this can work well when you combine strong foreground elements with the night sky.
If you’re planning to shoot at night:
bring a tripod
watch weather conditions
look for clear skies
arrive before dark to scout your composition
Sunrises at Hogback Overlook

From the late spring to early fall Hogback is actually a fantastic spot to see the sunrise. The sun is slow moving north along the ridgeline until the summer solstice, when it turns and starts heading back south. If you are on Hogback for a sunrise you won’t really see the sun as it breaks the horizon off in the east, but you will see if break the horizon over the Blue Ridge Mountains, which is by far a better and more interesting shot. I try to always get there at least 45 minutes before sunrise as that’s normally when the best color happens (see photo above)
