Skyline Drive road at sunset in Shenandoah National Park Virginia

Skyline Drive is one of the most scenic roads in the eastern United States and the main route through Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. The road runs for 105 miles along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains, connecting scenic overlooks, hiking trails, waterfalls, and some of the best photography locations in the region.

This Skyline Drive travel guide covers everything you need to know before visiting, including the best overlooks, favorite hikes, photography tips, and what to expect when driving through Shenandoah National Park. The north entrance to Skyline Drive is located just outside Front Royal, making it one of the easiest national park drives to reach from Northern Virginia and Washington DC.

Overview of Skyline Drive

Skyline Drive runs the entire length of Shenandoah National Park and follows the ridgeline of the Blue Ridge Mountains from Front Royal in the north to Rockfish Gap in the south. The drive is about 105 miles long and typically takes around three hours without stopping, but most visitors spend much longer because of the many overlooks, hiking trails, and scenic pull-offs along the way.

The speed limit on Skyline Drive is 35 miles per hour, which allows visitors to safely enjoy the views and watch for wildlife. Deer, wild turkeys, and even black bears are sometimes seen along the road, especially early in the morning or near sunset.

Skyline Drive is the main way visitors explore Shenandoah National Park, and many of the park’s most popular hikes, waterfalls, and overlooks can be reached directly from the road.

Entrances to Skyline Drive

Skyline Drive has four entrance stations located along the length of Shenandoah National Park.

North Entrance – Front Royal
The most popular entrance for visitors coming from Northern Virginia, Washington DC, and the Shenandoah Valley. This entrance is only minutes from Front Royal and provides quick access to some of the best overlooks in the park.

Thornton Gap Entrance
Located near Luray, this entrance provides access to the central section of Skyline Drive.

Swift Run Gap Entrance
Located farther south, this entrance connects to Route 33.

Rockfish Gap Entrance
The southern end of Skyline Drive near Waynesboro, where the Blue Ridge Parkway begins.

Many visitors choose the Front Royal entrance because it is the closest to the northern part of the park and offers easy access to Skyline Drive.

Best Overlooks on Skyline Drive

One of the best parts of Skyline Drive is the large number of scenic overlooks. There are more than 70 overlooks along the road, many of which provide incredible views without needing to hike.

Some of my favorite overlooks include:

Range View Overlook
One of the first overlooks after entering from Front Royal and one of the best views in the northern section of the park.

Hogback Overlook
A popular overlook with wide views of the Shenandoah Valley and one of the highest points on Skyline Drive.

Hazel Mountain Overlook
A quieter overlook that often has great light for sunrise and sunset photography.

Gooney Manor Overlook
A great location for sunset and night photography, especially in the fall.

Signal Knob Overlook
One of the best views near the north entrance with a wide look across the valley.

Many overlooks are only a short walk from the parking area, which makes Skyline Drive perfect for visitors who want great views without long hikes.

Best Hikes Along Skyline Drive

Hiking trail in Shenandoah National Park during fall

Many of the best hikes in Shenandoah National Park start from trailheads located directly on Skyline Drive. This makes it easy to combine scenic driving with short hikes during the same visit.

Some favorite hikes include:

Hawksbill Summit
The highest peak in Shenandoah National Park with incredible views.

Stony Man
A short hike with one of the best viewpoints in the park.

Dark Hollow Falls
One of the most popular waterfall hikes in Shenandoah.

Rose River Trail
A beautiful hike with waterfalls and forest scenery.

Marys Rock
A great hike with views looking over the valley.

Because Skyline Drive runs along the ridgeline, many trails begin at higher elevation, which means shorter hikes can still lead to amazing views.

Spring is usually the best time to see waterfalls because water flow is stronger, but they can be visited year-round.

Photography on Skyline Drive

Fall Sunrise From Hazel Mountain Overlook

Skyline Drive is one of the best photography locations in Virginia, especially for landscape photography. The road follows the top of the Blue Ridge Mountains, which makes it easy to find clear views of the valleys, mountains, and sky.

Sunrise and sunset are the best times for photography, and fog often forms in the valleys below the overlooks, creating dramatic scenes.

Fall colors in October are the most popular time for photography, but spring, summer, and winter can also provide great conditions.

Many of my photography workshops take place along Skyline Drive because there are so many reliable locations for great photos.
