Best Overlooks on Skyline Drive – Scenic Views in Shenandoah National Park

Mountain overlook view from Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park Virginia

Skyline Drive is famous for its scenic overlooks, with more than 70 viewpoints along the 105-mile road that runs through Shenandoah National Park. Many of these overlooks provide incredible views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Shenandoah Valley, and the forests that make this one of the most beautiful drives on the East Coast.

This guide to the best overlooks on Skyline Drive includes my favorite viewpoints, photography locations, and stops that are easy to reach from the Front Royal entrance. Whether you are visiting Shenandoah National Park for the first time or have driven Skyline Drive many times, these overlooks are some of the best places to stop.

Why Skyline Drive Has So Many Overlooks

Map of Skyline Drive running through Shenandoah National Park

Skyline Drive follows the ridgeline of the Blue Ridge Mountains, which means the road sits high above the valleys on both sides of Shenandoah National Park. Because of this, the park service created dozens of overlooks where visitors can safely pull off the road and enjoy the views.

Many overlooks require no hiking at all, making Skyline Drive one of the best places in the eastern United States for scenic mountain views without long trails.

Most overlooks are easy to reach from the north entrance near Front Royal, which makes this section of the park very popular for day trips.
